How It Works
This calculator estimates how much water a swimwear fabric will absorb and how that affects its weight. You'll select the fabric type of your swimsuit, and the calculator will show its estimated 'water-weight retention' percentage. A lower percentage means the fabric absorbs less water and will feel lighter and dry faster.
Why It's Important
A waterlogged swimsuit is heavy, uncomfortable, and can take a long time to dry. This can lead to chafing and a prolonged feeling of dampness. Choosing a swimwear fabric with low water retention means your suit will stay lightweight and comfortable, both in and out of the water, and will dry much more quickly post-swim.
Understanding Your Results
The water-weight retention percentage tells you how much extra weight the fabric takes on when wet. A low score (e.g., under 30%) is ideal for performance swimwear. A higher score might be acceptable for a casual poolside look but will be less comfortable for active swimming. Use this score to choose a swimsuit that will perform well and dry quickly.
Tips & Tricks
- Always rinse your swimsuit in cool, fresh water immediately after use.
- Never put your swimsuit in the washing machine or dryer. The agitation and heat can ruin the delicate fabric and elastic.
- Hand-wash your swimsuit with a mild soap or a specialized swimwear wash.
- To avoid a damp suitcase, pack a waterproof bag to store your wet swimsuit for the trip home.
- Having two swimsuits on vacation allows you to always have a dry one ready to wear.
